THE SCOUTS OF GOMA (DR.CONGO) ARE ACTIVE EVEN MORE IN RAISING AWARENESS FOR COMMUNITY REFORESTATION

In Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the RUZIZI RAPIDE Scout Group in its environmental program MAZINGIRA BORA continues to undertake actions in favor of the earth our home.

As part of its Project supported by the AFRICAN SCOUTING FOUNDATION, young Scout and Guide Eco-educators have already created 7,000 forest and fruit trees out of the 10,000 planned with varieties of forest trees such as (White Eucalyptus, Filao, Markhamia Lutea …) and fruit trees (Plum trees, Maracuja…).

Currently they have moved to the awareness phase through a campaign called “Tukinge MAZINGIRA” a Swahili term which means “Let’s protect the environment”.

In this campaign, young Eco educators carry out environmental actions to contribute to saving the climate and reducing greenhouse gases in schools and other targeted places where traces of the 2002 Nyiragongo volcano eruption are still visible.

A total of six schools, or nearly 5,000 students and teachers, were made aware of the role of trees and environmental protection. A good number of forest and fruit trees have also been planted in the schoolyards of its 6 schools and within the Notre Dame d’Afrique Parish.
